  1. 7:30 AM: Rajahmundry to the river

The day begins on the road. Your vehicle leaves Rajahmundry at 7:30 AM and heads toward the boat point at Gandipochamma Temple, known locally as Gandi Revu. The city thins out into villages, fields and then the first glimpse of water and low hills.

This is the part of the day to settle in, sip something warm and let the city go. In winter, the first half hour is cool enough for a light jacket.

  2. 9:00 AM: Check-in, breakfast and temple darshan

At the boat point you check in, collect your life jacket and settle on board. Breakfast is served on the boat. Many guests also visit the Gandipochamma Temple here, a well-known shrine on the riverbank, before the journey begins.

Staff will point out where to sit, where the life jackets are and how the day will run. If you want the open upper deck for photographs, say so early.

  3. Late morning: Gliding past Polavaram and Devipatnam

As the boat leaves the jetty, the river opens wide. You pass the Polavaram project area, the large dam works across the Godavari, and then the village of Devipatnam. The route includes a routine police check near Devipatnam, so keep a government photo ID handy.

After Devipatnam the banks begin to close in, forests thicken, and the sense of entering a gorge begins. This is the best time for a camera: wide water, cloud shadows, and the first hills.

  4. 1:00 PM: Vegetarian lunch while the hills slide by

Lunch is served on board while the boat keeps moving. A simple vegetarian meal tastes better than it should when the scenery outside the window is a wall of green hills and water the colour of slate. It is a good moment to meet your fellow passengers.

There is usually music, laughter and plenty of photographs. Children tend to sleep after lunch, so keep a light blanket or shawl handy.

  5. 2:00 PM: Reaching the Papikondalu hills

This is the moment the trip is named for. Around 2:00 PM the boat enters the Papikondalu stretch, where the Godavari narrows and steep forested ridges rise on both sides. The name Papikondalu is commonly explained as "hills of the parting", after the way the ridges split the river like the parting line in a head of hair.

The engine feels quieter here and the air cooler. Stay on the deck for this stretch. It is the part of the day you will describe to everyone afterwards.

  6. 3:00 PM: Perantapalli village, ashram and temple

The boat stops at Perantapalli, a small village on the river. You walk to Ramakrishna Muni Vatika and the Veereswara Swamy Temple, a quiet temple close to the landing. The village is home to local tribal families, so please be respectful and ask before taking portraits.

Wear comfortable shoes. The walk is short, but the riverbank can be uneven. Take a minute before you re-board to look back along the river.

  7. 3:30 PM: The golden journey home

From 3:30 PM the boat turns for the return, heading back toward Pattiseema, Polavaram or Purushothapatnam Revu, depending on the day. In winter, the sun now sits low and the light turns copper. This is when the river looks its richest.

From the landing point, a road journey brings you back to Rajahmundry, with an expected arrival around 7:30 PM. Most guests fall asleep in the vehicle with a camera roll full of hills.

Life on board: what it is actually like

A Papikondalu boat is a social place. Families share snacks, groups sing, and strangers end up swapping photographs. There are seats inside and open areas to stand and watch the hills. Because the trip is long, it helps to pick a seat with a view and to move around: the best photographs are often on the other side of the boat from where you started.
